De quoi il s’agit

Texte original de l’édition, en anglais

The Australian edition — written for the road rules and licensing laws of the States, with New South Wales as the reference State.

You dream of riding, but a thousand questions hold you back? That is exactly what this book is for: honest, on a first-name basis and with a special eye on women getting into riding. It takes you from your first time in the saddle through protective gear, riding physics and cornering technique to a passed rider knowledge test — and beyond, when those first kilometres turn into real journeys.

Three parts that work independently of one another:

  • Part I — Beginner Questions. Around 90 major topics with detailed answers to the questions you really ask yourself at the start: Why doesn't the bike fall over? How do I survive my first hill start? What do I have to wear, and what's just marketing?
  • Part II — The rider knowledge test. Practice questions in 33 topics: keeping left, giving way, roundabouts, school zones, speed limits for learners and provisional riders, alcohol and drugs, demerit points, licence stages and LAMS — plus the motorcycle-specific chapters the car books skip: lane filtering, braking, cornering, gravel and wildlife, heat, night riding, carrying a pillion and long distances.
  • Part III — nbnl.net. A guide to the online community: catalogue, adviser, route planner, Best Tracks, licence trainer and garage.

Test yourself honestly. Each question comes with its answer options first and the solution with its reasoning after it — so you can think it through before you look.

One country, eight rulebooks. Australia has no national road law: each State and Territory adopts the Australian Road Rules in its own legislation and runs its own licensing system. This book takes New South Wales as its reference State, names the State wherever a rule is not uniform, and tells you where the others differ — on lane filtering, on learner and provisional speed limits, on what you may carry. It quotes no dollar amounts, because the value of a penalty unit is set by each State and changes. And it cites its sources: each question names the rule or section it comes from.

Independent learning and practice work. No connection to, and neither endorsed nor approved by, Transport for NSW, Service NSW, the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning, VicRoads or any other State or Territory licensing authority. The questions are independently written from the road rules and licensing laws cited with each of them — they are not the questions of any State's knowledge test. Passing is not guaranteed. Legal position as at October 2026.
