Rights of use for routes
What you may do with downloaded NBNL routes — and what you may not. Last updated: July 2026.

This page applies to every route you download on nbnl.de — as GPX, KML or GeoJSON. Each of those files points here in its header.

The route geometry
The sequence of coordinates is derived from OpenStreetMap data. We claim no exclusive right of our own to it. It is covered by the Open Database License — and what that permits, NBNL permits too: commercial use included.
The collection
Which routes we have selected, checked, named, described and illustrated is our work. That is a database within the meaning of § 87a UrhG; what is protected is the investment in the compilation — not the individual road.
Applies to both layers
The source, author and licence details in the file header are rights-management information. Removing or altering them is unlawful under § 95c UrhG (German Copyright Act) — regardless of how easy it would be technically. This also covers the attribution of the OpenStreetMap contributors: the ODbL requires it in any case.
What is allowed
  • Downloading and using them for your own ride.
  • Transferring them to your navigation device or navigation app.
  • Passing on individual routes — with the provenance details kept in the file.
  • Any further use of the route geometry under the terms of the ODbL, in particular with attribution of the OpenStreetMap contributors. Commercial use included — you do not need to ask us.
What is not allowed
  • Taking over, redistributing or rebuilding the collection — our routes as a body of content on another portal, in a download package, in an app or in a database of your own. This applies to substantial parts just as much as to the repeated, systematic extraction of smaller amounts (§ 87b UrhG).
  • Taking over route descriptions and images — more on this below; separate rules apply to each.
  • Removing provenance details or altering them (§ 95c UrhG).
  • Automated retrieval (scraping) — see Terms and Conditions § 5a.
Map data: OpenStreetMap and ODbL

The route geometry is largely derived from OpenStreetMap data: pass nodes and the place index come from there, and our own router calculates the road course on that basis. The following therefore applies: © OpenStreetMap contributors, licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL).

We pass on the route geometry under exactly those terms. Anyone who reuses it enters into the ODbL — with everything it permits and with the obligations it imposes: attribution, and, if you publicly offer a database derived from it, once again under the ODbL.

Texts and images

The route descriptions are produced by machine and are editorially checked and signed off before publication. They are not released for reuse. The fact that machine-generated text as such attracts no copyright changes nothing here: what is protected is the collection, and even the systematic extraction of its contents is prohibited.

The images come from members or from freely licensed collections, mostly Wikimedia Commons. The credit appears directly beside each image: author, source and licence, with a link to the licence text. If you wish to reuse such an image, the licence named there by the respective photographer applies — not this page. Images from members are not released at all; they were entrusted to us for publication on nbnl.de, not for passing on to third parties.

Routes from members

Routes submitted by members remain with their authors; NBNL publishes them on the basis of the terms for uploads. For further use by third parties, the rules on this page apply in the same way.

Technical provenance markers

Every downloaded route carries markers proving its origin: the rights details in the file header, a signed identifier and a fingerprint in the route geometry itself. The fingerprint shifts individual points by less than 1.2 metres — below the accuracy of any GPS receiver, with no effect whatsoever on navigation. It survives the removal of the metadata and conversion between file formats.

We use these markers in order to be able to prove where our routes came from. They contain no information about you personally — only an identifier for the route itself.

Liability

Routes are provided without warranty. Road condition, closures, passability and traffic rules change; signage and the situation on the ground take precedence over any file. Responsibility for the ride lies solely with the person riding.

Changes to these terms

We adapt these terms when the legal situation, our data sources or our offering change. For a file you have already downloaded, the version stated in its file header continues to apply. The date of the current version appears at the top and at the foot of this page.

You need more

Would you like to use the collection as a whole, take over our texts and images, or integrate the routes into an offering of your own? Write to us at info@nbnl.de — licences beyond these terms are possible.
