Long Way Up – Ewan McGregor rides an electric Harley through America
13,000 miles on the Harley-Davidson LiveWire: from Ushuaia to Los Angeles
Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman have done it for a third time: with the Long Way Up series, the two friends embark on their most elaborate motorcycle journey to date – and this time entirely electric. 13,000 miles (approx. 21,000 km) through 13 countries, from the southernmost tip of the world to Los Angeles.
The route: From Ushuaia to L.A.
The starting point is Ushuaia in Argentina – the end of the world. From there, McGregor and Boorman battle their way north, through Patagonia, the Andes, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico and finally into the USA. 13 countries, one route that could hardly offer more extreme conditions.
What makes it special: Electric on the Harley-Davidson LiveWire
The highlight of this journey is the choice of machines: instead of classic adventure bikes, McGregor and Boorman ride modified Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric bikes. For an expedition through remote areas of South America, where charging infrastructure practically does not exist, this is an enormous logistical challenge. That is precisely where the appeal of the series lies: how do you overcome range problems when the next power connection is hundreds of kilometres away?
The predecessors: Long Way Round & Long Way Down
It is already the pair's third journey together. With Long Way Round (2004), they circumnavigated the globe from London via Europe and Asia to New York – around 30,000 km. Long Way Down followed in 2007, from England to South Africa (24,000 km). Both series are essential viewing for every motorcycle enthusiast and are available on DVD or via streaming.
Available on Apple TV+
Long Way Up is available as an 11-part documentary series on Apple TV+. Each episode shows another chapter of this impressive journey – with the typical moments of adventure, friendship, breakdowns and fascination that make the Long Way series so special.
Conclusion
My impression: Long Way Up consistently continues the tradition of the series and surpasses it technically – who would have thought you could ride an electric Harley through Patagonia? The series is not only a must for fans of McGregor and Boorman, but also an honest look at the reality of electric mobility beyond the comfort zone. Essential viewing for anyone who has a passion for wanderlust and engines.
