There are plenty of glossy GoPro influencers. Drone shots, dramatic music, three minutes of adrenaline. And then there is Joe Pichler. An Austrian from Salzburg who, together with his wife Renate, has been travelling the globe by motorcycle since 1984. His presentation style is the exact opposite of influencer cinema – and that is precisely why it is so addictive.

The journey: 27.145 km to India

Inspired by Max Reisch’s 1933 classic „Indien – lockende Ferne", Joe sets off eastwards on his Africa-tested KTM 1190 Adventure R. Renate occasionally rides pillion. The route is anything but standard:

  • Salzburg → Turkey → Iran through the Dasht-e Lut, one of the hottest deserts in the world
  • Kyrgyzstan with a tent camp at the foot of Pik Lenin in the Pamir Mountains
  • Karakoram Highway through Pakistan – one of the most spectacular and dangerous roads in the world
  • India: Ladakh, the Khardung La (one of the highest drivable mountain passes on Earth), then down into Indian traffic chaos all the way to southern India

At the end, there are 27.145 kilometres. From desert heat to snowy heights. From a tent in the mountains to Mumbai’s chorus of horns.

If looking for survival, do not believe in fast arrival. — Indian proverb, quoted by Joe Pichler

Why Joe Pichler is different

Joe Pichler has been travelling as a live presentation speaker for over 40 years. No rush, no effects, no staged emotions. Instead, 80 minutes of honest images, patient stories and a view of what matters to him: the country and its people.

What makes the Salzburg–India presentation special:

  • No preparation details, no technical talk – straight to the point
  • Authentic encounters instead of staged action
  • Images from regions hardly anyone dares to venture into (Pamir, Ladakh, the Indian hinterland)
  • Joe as a calm, likeable storyteller – no “Look-what-I-did”

For those who want more: his original KTM 1190 Adventure R from the Salzburg–India tour is on display at the KTM Motohall in Mattighofen. The real bike, the real dents.

Conclusion

My impression after 80 minutes: Joe Pichler’s presentation style is the antithesis of the influencer age. No “wow” cut every three seconds, no dramatic sound design – instead, people, landscapes and honest anecdotes. A clear recommendation, but beware: the presentation can trigger a severe case of travel fever. Anyone who has seen Joe and Renate on stage will seriously start thinking about their own Karakoram Highway tour.

Where to see it: josef-pichler.at lists all current tour dates in Austria and Germany – and sometimes also has a YouTube video with excerpts. Live is always better.
